In this section we will take a few moments to explore facts, myths and important information as you begin your diamond search.
You've probably been told that:
The higher the color the better the diamond?
That the clearer the diamond the better the diamond?
That the larger the diamond the better the diamond?
This is what we've been told for generations and this is how most people are buying their diamonds.
Let's take a look...
The shape of the diamond is often confused with the cut. Choose the shape that you like based on your style and you cannot go wrong.
The cut of a diamond determines its brilliance or sparkle.
IT IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IN THE BEAUTY OF A DIAMOND!
A poorly cut diamond will seem dull even with excellent clarity and color, conversely, a well cut diamond can have a slightly lower color and clarity and outperform the other due to its superior ability to create sparkle and brilliance.
Remember we said color is a RARITY FACTOR, it does not determine how beautiful the diamond will be.
If a diamond is graded properly D,E,F are colorless G,H,I,J are near colorless, after that you start to see the body color.
As we determined before, this is not to say that a diamond with a Color grade of E is BETTER than a diamond with a color grade of G....JUST RARER
REMEMBER, COLOR AND CLARITY WILL NOT DETERMINE THE BEAUTY OF A DIMAOND,
JUST THE RARITY OF IT.
Interestingly enough, practically all diamonds contain naturally occurring internal characteristics, called inclusions. The size, nature, location and amount of inclusions determine a diamond's clarity grade.
The amazing thing about diamonds is that, like snowflakes, no two are identical, and as with color, Clarity is a RARITY FACTOR and will not determine how beautiful your diamond will be, just how rare.
FL Diamonds Flawless: No internal or external flaws.
IF Diamonds Internally Flawless: No internal flaws.
VVS1, VVS2 Diamonds Very, Very Slightly included: Very difficult to see inclusions with 10x magnification.
VS1, VS2 Diamonds Very Slightly Included: Inclusions are visible under 10x magnification to a skilled grader.
S1, S2 Diamonds Slightly Included: Inclusions are visible under 10x magnification and may be visible to the unaided eye.
I1, I2, I3 Diamonds Included: Inclusions are visible with the unaided eye.
Carat weight is just that, a measurement of weight, not size. Diamonds of the same weight can appear very different in size based on the cut. If a diamond is cut too shallow or too deep, it will appear larger or smaller than a diamond cut to perfect proportions.
THE CUT IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IN DETERMINING THE BEAUTY OF THE DIAMOND!
So why is it that all diamonds are not cut to the same standards?
MONEY!
The majority of diamond cutters cut to increase the diamond weight, thus increasing the price of the diamond at the sacrifice of the beauty.
